These spareribs are marinated in lemon juice then baked in the oven with a tangy, slightly spicy homemade barbecue sauce.
Place spareribs in a large Dutch oven. Pour lemon juice over meat and add enough water to cover spareribs. Add onion and garlic powder. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer over medium heat for 1 1/2 hours. Remove from water and cool for 1/2 hour. Place in 13 1/2 x 9 x 2 baking dish. Pour homemade sauce over ribs. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours, turning ribs after first hour. If you marinate longer, turn ribs every hour.
BBQ Sauce:
In a skillet, saute onion in canola oil until tender. Remove from skillet and place in large saucepan. Add remaining ingredients and stir to mix well. Simmer on low to medium heat for about 1/2 hour, stirring often to prevent sticking or burning. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In shallow roasting pan, place ribs bone side down. Baste with BBQ sauce and bake about 45-50 minutes, basting often.
Notes:
While you don't have to marinate ribs for long I would suggest at least 2-4 hours, longer if possible.
