Favorite Pulled Pork

Pork shoulder roast is seasoned with steak sauce, soy sauce, onion and BBQ sauce for these delicious sandwiches served in Kaiser rolls.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 lb pork shoulder roast
  • 1 cup water
  • Heinz 57 sauce (1 bottle or 1 1/2 cups)
  • 3 to 4 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp coarsely ground pepper
  • Whole cloves
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • BBQ sauce (2 cups or enough to cover)
  • Kaiser rolls

Method

Brown roast in skillet on all sides (this is an important step). Remove, stud with whole cloves (I usually put about 8 of them on one side only) and put into crock pot. Reserve drippings in skillet. Add to pan drippings the water, Heinz 57 sauce, soy sauce, salt and pepper. Mix and heat slightly. Pour over roast in crock pot. Roast should be covered in liquid. Add more water if necessary. Cook on high heat setting at least 4 hours (or at least 8 hours on low setting) until very tender--the longer the better. Remove roast to a large plate (discard liquid), cool enough to handle, and pull apart with fork, discarding any fat. (Cloves can be left on the meat as these soften and break down nicely). Return shredded meat to crock pot. Add onions. Dump bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce over it (enough to cover) and let it simmer at low until heated thoroughly. Serve on toasted Kaiser rolls.

Notes: This recipe has never failed to please. Sweet/tangy sauce is just right for the very tender pork.

Number of servings: makes 10 or more good-size sandwiches
